I can’t think of anything more annoying that to have a bunch of fruit flies swarming around fresh garden produce in the kitchen.
As a busy mom I do not have time to mess around trying to kill all of the gnats and neither do you! I have tried many different ways of getting rid of them fast.
Today I am going to share the best ways to eradicate those pesky fruit flies for good.
This post is all about how to get rid of fruit flies in your house.
How To Get Rid of Fruit Flies In Your House
Zevo Fruit Fly Trap
This has been by far been my favorite way of getting rid of fruit flies in my house and bonus it doubles as a night light, joking only a little.
This fruit fly trap is plugged in in our kitchen and has a faint blue light to attract the gnats. The fruit flies stick to the sticky part of trap and are unable to free themselves.
We have only replaced the sticky part a couple of times in the past few years that we have had this fruit fly trap. We have seen a drastic decrease in the number of fruit flies in our house since using the ZEVO Fruit Fly Trap.
I love that the sticky part of this trap is hidden behind the hard plastic cover. My kids have been a lot less likely to play with it like some of the other sticky traps.
Sticky Fruit Fly Trap
When I have started my seedlings for my garden in our basement I have used these sticky gnat traps. They work extremely well.
They work by emitting a pheromone that attracts the fruit flies to it and they get stuck to the sticky part. The bright yellow color also attracts the small flying insects.
I found that my kids were also attracted to them by their color and loved the sticky sensation. Pretty soon the sticky part would not be sticky anymore thanks to my kids grabby hands.
I still use these fruit fly traps in our basement when I am growing our new seedlings for this years garden but i don’t use them in places where my kids frequent.
Homemade Fruit Fly Spray
I prefer to only use natural things in our house if at all possible, so when we had an infestation of fruit flies in our kitchen I found on Martha Steward.com that she suggested 91 percent isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle.
“Instead of dangerous and toxic pesticide spray, use 91 percent isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle,” says Timothy Wong, technical director at MMPC, an environmentally sensitive pest control company. “It is effective at killing the flies on contact and less harmful than conventional pesticide.” MarthaStewart.com
I thought I would give it a try. It worked great and took care of the fruit fly problem, but it also created another problem!
We now had a wet and slippery kitchen floor. I also didn’t think that I had to take time to spray all of the gnats when i could have been doing other things. As a mom of 5 I don’t have that kind of time to devote to spraying fruit flies in my kitchen.
