If you feel like you’re constantly behind, exhausted, and just surviving each day, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I know how overwhelming it can feel. But I want to encourage you—there is a way out, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. You too can get out of survival mode!

Today, I’m sharing simple shifts in perspective and daily habits that have helped me move from survival mode to truly thriving as a mom. These aren’t huge life changes, just small, doable adjustments that make a big difference.
This post is all about how to get out of survival mode as a mom.
Recognizing That You’re in Survival Mode
The first step to getting out of survival mode is realizing that you’re in it. Moms get so caught up in the daily grind that we don’t always notice how drained we feel.
Signs you may be in survival mode:
- You wake up feeling behind before the day even starts.
- Your house always feels like a mess, and you don’t know where to start.
- Cooking meals feels too overwhelming, so you rely on takeout or frozen dinners.
- You feel mentally exhausted, like you never get a break.
- You feel guilty because you want to enjoy motherhood, but it just feels hard.
If any of this sounds familiar, I want you to know—you’re not failing. You’re in a season that requires extra grace and care for yourself. Here are some small, easy wins that can help reset your mindset and get you back on track.
1. The 5-Minute Reset
Tackling everything at once is unrealistic, but a quick 5-minute reset can make a big difference. Pick one small area to tidy—your kitchen counters, bathroom, or even just making your bed. Set a timer for five minutes and focus on that one space. A clean and peaceful spot can shift your mood instantly.

2. Simplify Your Meals
Cooking can feel overwhelming when you’re already stretched thin. Give yourself permission to embrace simple, nutritious meals instead of aiming for perfection every night.
Here are some go-to meals that my family loves:
- Twisted Caesar Salad – Make a Caesar salad, cook some penne pasta, and bake chicken tenders. Chop them up and mix everything together—so easy and delicious!
- Spaghetti & Salad – A classic, quick meal.
- Bean & Cheese Burritos – Assemble, bake at 400°F for 15 minutes, and you’re done!
- French Bread Pizza – Slice a loaf of French bread, add toppings, and bake at 400°F for 15 minutes. One of our favorites is chicken bacon ranch (ranch dressing, mozzarella, pre-cooked chicken, and bacon).
Dinner doesn’t have to be fancy—just focus on feeding your family without the stress.
3. Allow Yourself to Rest
Rest isn’t just about sleep—it’s about giving your brain a break. Moms are constantly being pulled in different directions, and burnout is real.
Pick one small way to recharge each day, even if it’s just for five or ten minutes:
- Wake up a little earlier to enjoy coffee and read scripture before the house wakes up.
- Take a 10-minute walk outside.
- Lay down for 10-15 minutes after lunch while your youngest naps. (This is my favorite reset!)
- Read a book, crochet, or do something that helps you unwind.
You don’t need to earn rest—you deserve it. Taking care of yourself allows you to take care of others.
4. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
Many moms stay in survival mode because they feel like they need to do everything perfectly. But the truth is, perfection isn’t the goal—progress is.
One of my favorite sayings is:
“We greatly overestimate how much we can do in a day, but we greatly underestimate how much we can accomplish in a year.”
The little things you do each day add up. It’s okay if your house isn’t spotless or if you don’t finish your to-do list. Small, consistent steps lead to big progress over time.
Take Action Today
I want you to pick one thing from this list to do today:
- Tidy a space for five minutes.
- Give yourself a small break to rest.
- Make a simple meal instead of stressing about dinner.
